This is usually asked as a question about effectiveness. It is really a question about logistics, and the honest answer is less exciting than either side wants it to be.
When people stick to the programme, online and in-person coaching produce broadly comparable results. A 2021 review found no significant difference in strength or body-composition outcomes between formats among participants who adhered.
That single finding reframes the whole comparison. If both work when followed, the useful question is not which is better — it is which one will you actually follow.
The gap is mostly the trainer's travel and the gym's rent, neither of which is training.
An hour at the gym is rarely an hour. In most Indian cities it is 20 to 40 minutes of travel each way, plus changing, plus waiting for a rack at 7pm. Call it two hours for a one-hour session.
Do that five times a week and the gym is costing you ten hours, not five. That arithmetic is the single most common reason a gym membership goes unused by March — not laziness, just a schedule that never had room for it.
Home training costs you the length of the session and nothing else.
Be fair about this. There are real advantages, and they are not marketing:
A reasonable rule:
Choose in-person if your goal is heavy barbell strength, you are rehabilitating something that needs hands on it, or you know from experience that you will not train unless you have left the house.
Choose online if your week is the constraint, you travel, you want privacy, there is no coach near you worth paying, or you have tried a gym membership and watched it go unused.
Choose a live online group class if you are starting out and the honest obstacles are time, cost and not knowing what to do — which describes most people, most of the time.
Treating this as a permanent decision. It is not. Plenty of people start in a group class, get strong enough to want a barbell, and go and find one. That is the system working, not the plan failing.
Start with the format you will keep for the next six months. You can be right about the next thing later.
If you are not sure where you sit, the self-assessment is free and will tell you which of the three you would actually be best served by.

Live classes run several times a week, with a coach watching your form rather than a video playing at you.
